Going to the Boston Comic Con? Meet One of the Artists: Emma McGowan!
As some of you may remember, the ICBR was a participant at the 2015 Boston Comic Con. When we attended the show, we were amazed at all of the talented creators and artists that surrounded us. One of these artists that just blew us away just happened to be the booth next door. Now as a participant of Artist Alley, you might expect that our neighbor would have been a comic book artist or a writer or an inker. That wasn’t the case this time. What really amazed me was that my neighbor at the convention was a painter. I showed up to the convention early on Friday and was treated to these visual delights before anyone else showed up. The painter wasn’t even there yet when I first showed up in the morning. Since I had a few moments to myself, I had the privilege to stand back and really appreciate this work without having to worry about contending with the crowd that I was sure this booth would draw. I can only relate to this experience as getting the chance to attend a private showcase at a local museum. I was truly fascinated by the work and was excited by the chance to admire it for the entire weekend (though also privately cursing it because I knew it was going attract attention away from my booth). I’ve been around artists my entire life because I grew up in the San Francisco area. Not all of them are nice people. I can’t stand to be around talented people that are just absolutely ugly inside. I was afraid that this artist would be the same. When Emma McGowan appeared, she had a personality as great as her artwork. Emma was a truly sweet woman and I enjoyed getting to know her over the weekend back in August. I’ve had the chance to stay in touch with Emma since then and talk to her about getting into the comic book world similar to the role that Alex Ross has been making a career in since his 1994 mini series, Marvels, with writer Kurt Busiek.
