OK, so I know that this site is all about Indie Comic Books and I’m not here to promote Marvel or DC, but every now and then I have to say something.  If there is one things that pisses me off more than anything else, it is when someone that obviously knows NOTHING about comics tries to tell me about comics.  Earlier today, Answers.com released an article on the most dangerous Marvel villains.  I grew up with Marvel. I’m not going to lie and say that I’ve never been a fan.  True, I don’t read them anymore so I may be out dated by 2-3 years, but not a whole lot happens in 3 years that will turn the history of a publisher upside-down.   I’m not going to make you read the Answers.com article because it is VERY painful to read, so without further ado, where is the top 19 villains from the Marvel Universe…

1.       Thanos
2.       Loki
3.       Galactus
4.       Magneto
5.       Ultron
6.       Apocalypse
7.       Red Skull
8.       Doctor Doom
9.       Kingpin
10.   Sabertooth
11.   Green Goblin
12.   Lady Deathstrike
13.   MODOK
14.   Bullseye
15.   Enchantress
16.   Dark Phoenix
17.   Sentinels
18.   Juggernaut
19.   Doctor Octopus

Can anyone with any type of comic book knowledge actually agree with this list???  The list itself made absolutely no sense other than the fact that the person that wrote it only has Marvel Cineverse knowledge.

Let us put Marvel aside for a minute and really digest how to rank things.  First off, lets group villains into three different buckets.  The way that I like to group any type of character is as follows:

1.       Divine (or Celestial)
2.       Super-powered
3.       Human

Even with those three categories, we can continue to break the categories down even further:

1.       Divine (or Celestial)
         a.      Omnipotent
         b.      Eternal
2.      Super-powered
         a.       Mutant (obviously)
         b.      Science (freak accident)
         c.       Alien
         d.      Cyborgs/Robots
3.      Human
         a.      Intelligent
         b.      Weaponry
         c.      Strategic
         d.      Insane
         e.      Brute
         f.       Animals

Now, if we are comparing characters in terms of strength, Divine will normally always beat Super-powered who will always beat human.  I understand that heroes will always beat villains, so let us please remove that old dried out thought process.  Let’s state this real simple like… If I CANNOT die, eventually I will outlast / out survive the person that can.  Therefore, if I am a divine creature, I will always win.

On the other side of the coin, if I have super powers, I have the advantage over a human.  There is no way in hell that Batman could ever beat Superman.  Sure, Batman is smart which is why he has advantage over the other 5 sub-categories in the Human area.  He is also especially lucky that all of his advisories are Insane.  Insanity doesn’t come up with much of a plan and is usually easily defeated.

But back to the Answers.com listing…   Numbers 7, 8, 11, 14 and 19 are all humans.  Yes, they’ve caused a lot of damage over the years, but they are just human.  Treat them as such and put them at the bottom of the list.  I mean seriously, how do you expect the Red Skull to be more powerful than the Dark Phoenix.  A little German dude versus the power of the Phoenix.  Battle over within 2 seconds?  Did I give it one second too long?  And the list is missing so many awesome villains that this puny list of 19 is laughable.  Here are a few major hitters missing (but these are not in any particular order):

1.       Venom
2.       Carnage
3.       Taskmaster
4.       Acolyte
5.       Mr. Sinister
6.       Fin Fang Foom
7.       Dormammu
8.       Annihilus
9.       Death
10.   Eternity

These are just 10 off of the top of my head.  How is Annihilus not in the top?   Just a few years back he ruled the Space comics.  Taskmaster is such a great villain that he trains other villains. Fin Fang Foom is a freaken dragon for goodness sakes. And well death is death.

So please, if you don’t know anything about comics, don’t write article about comics.  Leave that to us Super-Nerds and life will be so much easier for you.

I, M. Willis, am the owner of the ICBR. I'm a huge fan of the Indie and Small Press books because I get tired of the same-old, same-old.  While I put a lot of time into the articles that I write (each article usually takes me about 4-5 hours to put together), this section is for my quick thoughts on the books that I read throughout the week.
